By the late 1970s, economic changes turned America’s industrial area into what came to be known as the “Rust Belt.” Jaden’s father, Russell worked at a major auto plant in Detroit and was caught up in a massive layoff. He’d already ruffled a few feathers of those in management due to his prominent voice in union affairs. That courageous activity hastened his layoff.
First they lose their house, then wind up in a homeless shelter. Finally, Russell has to swallow his pride, move from Detroit to Oklahoma to accept a job in a fertilizer plant—as low man on the totem pole.
